in search of...
hows this killer voodoo documentary narated by lenard nimoy? this was taken from the late 1970's tv series in search of... this episode was originally broadcasted on July 26 1977
"This series presents information based in part on theory and conjecture. The producer's purpose is to suggest some possible explanations, but not necessarily the only ones, to the mysteries we will examine."

early abstractions
Early Abstractions is a collection of seven short animated films created by Harry Everett Smith between 1939 and 1956. Each film is between two and six minutes long, and is named according to the chronological order in which it was made. The collection includes Numbers 1–5, 7, and 10, while the missing Numbers 6, 8, and 9 are presumed to have been lost.
The idea of the numbering was to suggest a coherent link between each individual film, and that they were to be treated not just on their own but as part of a larger body of work. Of the missing chapters, Number 6 was made up of three dimensional optically printed abstractions; Number 8 was a black and white collage of clippings taken from nineteenth century ladies wear catalogues and elocution books, and Number 9 was a color collage of biology books and nineteenth century temperance posters. The remaining films show a gradual evolution in Smith's technical complexity, with blunt abstraction rudimentary motion more prominent in the early shorts, in contrast to an allegoric dance of Tarot cards, and Buddhist and Cabalistic symbols.
Initially recorded with no sound, a medley of music by The Beatles was added retrospectively. Because the songs do not exactly sync up with each individual film, some critics have opined that this does not enhance the film, and recommend watching it in silence.
In 2006, Early Abstractions was selected to the National Film Registry by the Librarian of Congress for its "cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance".

trick baby
Iceberg Slim (August 4, 1918 – April 28, 1992), also known as Robert Beck, was an African American author of books variously categorized as urban fiction, street literature, and black pulp fiction.
"Trick Baby charts the rise of White Folks, a white Negro who uses his colour as a trump card in the tough game of the Con. Blue-eyed, light-haired and white-skinned, White Folks is the most incredible con man the ghetto ever spawned, a hustler in the jungle of Southside Chicago where only the sharpest survive.
With his partner Blue, an old hand who teaches him the tricks of the trade, White Folks rises to the top of his profession. The cons he pulls off get more and more lucrative and dangerous until one day they go too far..."

“After awhile you learn the subtle difference
between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn't mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises.
And you begin to accept your defeats with you head up and your eyes open.
With the grace of maturity, not the grief of a child.
And you learn to build all your roads on
Today because tommorow's ground is too uncertain for plans,
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
After awhile you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much.
So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure...
That you really are strong
And that you really do have worth.
And you learn and learn and learn ....
With every goodbye you learn.”

Lost artists.....errrrrrrr should I say artifacts....
For the next few weeks, I've decided to post simple rants about artists who had their roots in garage/psych bands of the 60's and went on to become huge acts of the 70's. Here's your first taste... When most people think of Todd Rundgren, they think of crappy 70's rock and a lame-ass glam vibe... Or perhaps, they think of the album Bat Out Of Hell by Meatloaf, which HE produced....more importantly to me, was the FIRST album by the New York Dolls, which he TOO is responsible for producing... However, take the song "Rowed Out" by the Eyes, or even yet "I Can't Explain" by the Who, and perhaps add some Beach Boys and you get a pop song entitled "Open My Eyes" by a band called the Nazz....Rundgren circa 67/68.....

divine horsemen of haiti
Maya Deren was an American avant-garde filmmaker of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1947 the Guggenheim grant enabled Deren to finance travel to Haiti to document and record the rituals of vodoo. She made three trips to the island. The following is her footage edited and compiled by Teiji and Cherel Ito as Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti. It was released in 1981.

vinyl people
A portrait of Vinyl collectors and producers and aficionados. From the owner of a Charlie Parker album worth 10,000 who believes in playing it and prefers mono to stereo to the producers at Norton Records where rock musicians who had fallen off the charts are restored to vinyl to be heard again. To that add the proprietor of Fynl Vinyl, straight out of a Nick Hornsby novel and a homemade Gramophone brought by it's owner and maker to Washington Square Park every Sunday to play a collection of 78's. Produced for WNET City Arts by Howard Silver.
